Kinesiology tape isn't magic — but when used correctly, it can make a real difference. At Motus Walk-In Chiropractic, we use taping strategically alongside adjustments and soft-tissue work to help support injured areas, reduce swelling, improve your body's movement awareness, and keep you active while you heal.
Taping can be used in injury prevention when we need to restrict a mobile or weak joint. This is often the case in shoulders or ankles. The mobility of these joints lead to increased instability. Taping offers extra support to help the joint withstand the high amount of stress that sports put on the it.
Taping can help with swelling and recovery from injuries by lifting up and separating the subcutaneous tissue, allowing the blood and lymph to flow easier. This allows the blood to flow smoother, and increase the amount of healing factors brought to the tissue.
Taping, particularly with kinesiology tape, is believed to enhance proprioception by stimulating the sensory receptors in the skin and muscles. This stimulation can lead to improved joint position sense and movement accuracy. The tape provides continuous sensory feedback to the skin, which can increase postural stability and awareness.
Nope! Kinesiology tape works best as a complement to mobility work, strength training, and hands-on care. It can reinforce good movement patterns and provide support between visits, but it's not a stand-alone fix.
Taping can provide short-term pain relief and support for a range of conditions — particularly runner's knee, ankle instability, shoulder issues, and lower back pain. It may also improve proprioception, helping your body better sense its position and move more efficiently. We use it purposefully where evidence supports it, paired with active care for lasting results.
Most applications last 1–5 days. You can shower and sweat with it on — just pat it dry rather than rubbing. If you notice skin irritation, itching, or a rash, remove it early and let us know.
Yes to both. The tape is designed to move with your body and hold up to moisture. Pat dry after showering and avoid peeling at the edges — that's usually what causes it to come off early.
No — they serve different purposes. Rigid athletic tape is designed to restrict movement and maximize joint stability, commonly used for acute sprains. Kinesiology tape is flexible, moves with your body, and works by providing sensory feedback and light support without limiting range of motion.
For most people, yes. We screen for any skin sensitivities before applying and adjust our technique based on your needs. If you have a known latex allergy or very sensitive skin, just let us know ahead of time.
